<br />
I will no longer update this blog. I have decided to create a page on Facebook. I will leave this blog up, and I may reference information on it via my new Facebook page. I have thoroughly enjoyed garden blogging , but it was taking too much time and I wasn't posting very much anymore.<br />
<br />
My new facebook page is <a class="profileLink" data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/page.php?id=325372834280156" href="https://www.facebook.com/GeorgiaHomeGarden" target="_blank">Georgia Home Garden</a>, just like my blog. Please like and share with others who may be interested. I hope to post information more often.<br />
<br />

has been three weeks since my surgery and I had another follow up
appointment at Emory this morning. Overall the results were very
positive, and here are the highlights:<br /> </span><ul>

Thank you again for all your prayers and support. The prayers and
positive thinking have no doubt helped my eye heal. I am not out of the

Life has thrown another curve ball at me and I am trying my best to adjust. I had a retina detachment in my left eye. It has been one week since my surgery and I am trying to cope with the stress and strain of the situation. I will save the details on what that is, but just google it and you will quickly find what a scary situation it is to find yourself in.<br />
<br />
I plan to post more about what happened and give updates as things progress. I have at least a few months of recovery before I will know how my vision will be. <br />
<br />
Please pray for me and my family during this time.<br />
<br />
This scripture is helping me get through.<br />

I have always wanted to grow them, but this year I actually planted some Kennebec white potatoes in my coca cola cooler planter box. I harvested about 7 pounds and the potatoes were decent size.<br />
<br />
We have eaten them all week, and they taste so good. I made home made french fries, potato chips, and garlic mash potatoes. I am considering replanting them for a fall harvest.<br />
<br />
Freshly dug potatoes<br />

<br />
Almost 7 lbs <br />

<br />
Here they are all clean and ready to go.<br />

<br />
Nice pepper harvest this week too.<br />

A few more tomatoes<br />

My garden is not gonna be much this year, partly due to my neglect, but partly because of rain. It rains every day it seems. While the last two years were so dry, this year has more than made up for it. This one post shows all my harvests for the whole year. There will be more to come, but it won't be much. <br />
<br />
So far this year, I have a grand total of 10 pounds of harvests, and here they are.<br />
<br />
Habanero Peppers<br />

Batch of tomatoes, I have had a few more but not many.<br />

It is clear that the process of creating a quality garden soil from scratch really worked better than I realized. This year I had to resort to the one size fits all approach of getting soil from a sand and gravel yard. It was decent soil, but it is clearly inferior to what I had before. It is also clear that I won't be blogging as regular as before. I am averaging about once a month, and I would like to post at least once a week. Maybe if I start getting harvests, that will motivate me to post. <br />
<br />
Do I have a garden...yes.<br />
Will I harvest anything from it....we will see.<br />
<br />
Let's start with the one bright spot, the Kennebec potatoes in my coca cola cooler. I have been adding soil as they have grown and this is how big they were two weeks ago.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZkmicXeV5Xs/Ua06__jdd0I/AAAAAAAADHs/7u0pQP1TF7Q/s1600/DSCN9258.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZkmicXeV5Xs/Ua06__jdd0I/AAAAAAAADHs/7u0pQP1TF7Q/s320/DSCN9258.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Look at these things, I swear they grow a foot a day. I can't wait to see if get some good potatoes.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H47Y_qR51Pc/Ua07E0jrQBI/AAAAAAAADJs/nqZyE2LVvqA/s1600/DSCN9312.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H47Y_qR51Pc/Ua07E0jrQBI/AAAAAAAADJs/nqZyE2LVvqA/s320/DSCN9312.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
I have my first tomato baby of the season. <br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FASTNmFzGCA/Ua07AL3V9cI/AAAAAAAADH0/vB8L_s7ewfA/s1600/DSCN9287.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FASTNmFzGCA/Ua07AL3V9cI/AAAAAAAADH0/vB8L_s7ewfA/s320/DSCN9287.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Here are the 12 tomato plants. They are growing, but they aren't as robust as last years.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--GAixlNi3NE/Ua07AQiMy8I/AAAAAAAADH8/g6WOP05Qnns/s1600/DSCN9288.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--GAixlNi3NE/Ua07AQiMy8I/AAAAAAAADH8/g6WOP05Qnns/s320/DSCN9288.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Now some of the ugly, here are my squash and zucchini bed. Plants are small and weak.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nhgqv9ksXGg/Ua07A4F5AvI/AAAAAAAADIM/iECofqvVhgg/s1600/DSCN9289.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nhgqv9ksXGg/Ua07A4F5AvI/AAAAAAAADIM/iECofqvVhgg/s320/DSCN9289.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Out of 12 plants, I have only one zucchini.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vN3OIVp1QeM/Ua07Be2iJZI/AAAAAAAADIY/qPw2ZyK5gN4/s1600/DSCN9290.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vN3OIVp1QeM/Ua07Be2iJZI/AAAAAAAADIY/qPw2ZyK5gN4/s320/DSCN9290.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
The bees aren't doing their job of pollinating the flowers and they are just dropping off.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mzwphHqEiZQ/Ua07B50Q3GI/AAAAAAAADIo/hQuUODQqg-0/s1600/DSCN9291.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mzwphHqEiZQ/Ua07B50Q3GI/AAAAAAAADIo/hQuUODQqg-0/s320/DSCN9291.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Here is my pepper bed, you can see my new fence in background. I have stained the entire outside of it and I think it looks good. Now I have to do the inside.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3pwQnJ3minM/Ua07C_cRv6I/AAAAAAAADIw/fXXyadaL6Rg/s1600/DSCN9293.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3pwQnJ3minM/Ua07C_cRv6I/AAAAAAAADIw/fXXyadaL6Rg/s320/DSCN9293.JPG" /></a><br />

This year is going to be a rebuilding year and my garden will be smaller than previous years. Moving to a new house and having to get a garden going on top of all my other projects has been a bit overwhelming. <br />
<br />
I will try and give the reader's digest version on what I have been doing since January. I said I wasn't going to start plants from seeds this year because of time. Well, that went out the window and I started tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants from seed. I decided to set my beds up in "L" configurations to conserve space. I filled the six beds with a garden soil mix from a sand and gravel yard. I didn't take time to amend the soil, I just went with their mix so I hope it works. After filling the beds, I have been planting for the past three weeks. I hope to post regular garden updates now that I am off and running. <br />
<br />
Here is an overall picture of the new garden, you can see the three "L" shapes I created. You can the layout of these same beds at my <a href="http://georgiahomegarden.blogspot.com/2011/04/2011-garden-square-foot-gardening.html" target="_blank">old house here</a>. I kind of like this new configuration, it saves space and I still have plenty of room to reach into beds.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0k0lCFELzdU/UYcL3ktxkSI/AAAAAAAADGM/D99f-VNwZ6Q/s1600/IMG_0401.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0k0lCFELzdU/UYcL3ktxkSI/AAAAAAAADGM/D99f-VNwZ6Q/s320/IMG_0401.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Bed Number 1 - Nothing but tomatoes here. I have a total of 12 tomatoes this year which is double the amount I planted last year. I have the same combination of Better Boys, Best Boys, and Roma tomatoes. I have the bed all covered in plastic and caged up. This should be a tomato forest in a few month months.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qr95MYatVYY/UYcL528U6cI/AAAAAAAADG8/CvOO0x8smj8/s1600/IMG_0394.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qr95MYatVYY/UYcL528U6cI/AAAAAAAADG8/CvOO0x8smj8/s320/IMG_0394.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Bed Number 2 - Eight yellow squash plants in the background, and four zucchini in the foreground. I plan to harvest these hard until the borers get them in a few months and then plant something else in July, corn maybe.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FUkkcSavM-k/UYcL6JshsrI/AAAAAAAADHE/exg440XlcvM/s1600/IMG_0393.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FUkkcSavM-k/UYcL6JshsrI/AAAAAAAADHE/exg440XlcvM/s320/IMG_0393.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Bed Number 3 - This bed contains peppers, eggplants, and lettuce. I have planted 4 jalapenos, 3 Hungarian wax peppers, 2 habanero peppers, 2 yellow bell peppers. They haven't sprouted yet, but I have planted lettuce and romaine as well. I still have two slots in the top right corner that need to be planted with something. Ideas anyone?<br />

I have never grown them before and after seeing fellow bloggers harvests, I have made it a priority to try them this year. I am running out of garden space in my raised beds so I decided to plant my potatoes in my Coca Cola cooler planter box. Last year I planted peppers in this box, and <a href="http://georgiahomegarden.blogspot.com/2012/04/coca-cola-cooler-pepper-planter-box.html" target="_blank">here is that post.</a><br />
<br />
I wanted to plant red potatoes, but the local nursery only had Kennebec seed potatoes so I had to work with what they had. I really hope I get some good potatoes.<br />
<br />
Here is the cooler box positioned in front of my little storage shed.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7dnyOBqN1mE/UYGNbYbtf-I/AAAAAAAADEM/hTSEwsSlaiw/s1600/IMG_0386.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7dnyOBqN1mE/UYGNbYbtf-I/AAAAAAAADEM/hTSEwsSlaiw/s320/IMG_0386.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I started by cutting the potatoes into chunks with several sprouts per piece. I waited two days for them to brown over before planting at the advice of the nursery owner.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NeFoJUJ-BEs/UYGNgWV2O5I/AAAAAAAADF4/TxiFhDbDpJU/s1600/IMG_0377.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NeFoJUJ-BEs/UYGNgWV2O5I/AAAAAAAADF4/TxiFhDbDpJU/s320/IMG_0377.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
The cooler had decent soil, and it was filled to the top. I shoveled out all the dirt except for 5 to 6 inches of soil. I spread out the pieces in the cooler, they are spaced 8 to 10 inches
apart. I know that is a little too close, but I wanted to use as many
pieces as possible.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9fEeH5L2nd4/UYGNczNxlaI/AAAAAAAADEw/Ey3z5xls8Bg/s1600/IMG_0383.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9fEeH5L2nd4/UYGNczNxlaI/AAAAAAAADEw/Ey3z5xls8Bg/s320/IMG_0383.jpg" /></a> <br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tlpKhydqxRI/UYGNb0U5NoI/AAAAAAAADEY/nS1JSG9ZyX8/s1600/IMG_0385.jpg"><br /></a>
I added an additional layer of soil covering the potatoes. I have read that as the sprouts grow up, you add additional soil around them until your planter is filled to the top with soil. We will see what happens. <br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tlpKhydqxRI/UYGNb0U5NoI/AAAAAAAADEY/nS1JSG9ZyX8/s1600/IMG_0385.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tlpKhydqxRI/UYGNb0U5NoI/AAAAAAAADEY/nS1JSG9ZyX8/s320/IMG_0385.jpg" /></a>Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18421605987086278458noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2913864041606190081.post-16911762141055996382013-04-27T23:08:00.000-04:002013-04-27T23:20:34.673-04:00Fence Project Done - What a difference!The fence project is done and I am so glad I decided to expand our back yard into the side yard. My back yard feels huge now, and my mind is running wild with new projects I can do. Me and the oldest daughter have already been playing baseball, and I have some ideas on adding some more garden areas in the future.<br />
I have taken a lot of pictures, but here are some good ones.<br />
<br />
View of the back fence wall. This section had to face me due to a neighbors existing fence.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AqpAUG9cikg/UXyOVOPiKPI/AAAAAAAADBU/4EILD-ZWm3Y/s1600/IMG_0371.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AqpAUG9cikg/UXyOVOPiKPI/AAAAAAAADBU/4EILD-ZWm3Y/s320/IMG_0371.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
The old fence came off the corner of my house and followed that orange dirt. I used the dirt they dug up for the posts and filled in a huge low spot. The new fence comes off the house 20 feet, and this is a view of the additional backyard space.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F03iW30sOnY/UXyOWPkj96I/AAAAAAAADBs/y0_3s54nAq0/s1600/IMG_0369.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F03iW30sOnY/UXyOWPkj96I/AAAAAAAADBs/y0_3s54nAq0/s320/IMG_0369.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Nice picture showing fence detail.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l72F-sFtChA/UXyOWfnG1LI/AAAAAAAADB4/Eb104KCXd1s/s1600/IMG_0364.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l72F-sFtChA/UXyOWfnG1LI/AAAAAAAADB4/Eb104KCXd1s/s320/IMG_0364.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I had a small walk through gate added so I can get to my garden from the back yard. Notice the 6x6 post used for hinge side of gate.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sXMdIY656iI/UXyOW8fjsUI/AAAAAAAADCE/USUQ7q3b-R0/s1600/IMG_0361.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sXMdIY656iI/UXyOW8fjsUI/AAAAAAAADCE/USUQ7q3b-R0/s320/IMG_0361.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
View from the garden.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjDw2R7AaUk/UXyOYNTGGQI/AAAAAAAADCc/TG4HztX2DpU/s1600/IMG_0354.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjDw2R7AaUk/UXyOYNTGGQI/AAAAAAAADCc/TG4HztX2DpU/s320/IMG_0354.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Great view from the street looking toward my house, I can't wait for the Nuttall Oaks I planted last fall to grow and fill in this area.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XBx32iGpBLU/UXyOYtBb2-I/AAAAAAAADCo/dI_VSov6Q1s/s1600/IMG_0352.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XBx32iGpBLU/UXyOYtBb2-I/AAAAAAAADCo/dI_VSov6Q1s/s320/IMG_0352.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
This is the section of fence that is double sided. Notice how straight the pickets are and you can't even see that there are pickets on both sides. This fence installer used string lines for everything, and he used a level on every picket for this double sided section. A true craftsman.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rTLwBzk8Ht4/UXyOZTWlaZI/AAAAAAAADDA/WSV1ArFQens/s1600/IMG_0350.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rTLwBzk8Ht4/UXyOZTWlaZI/AAAAAAAADDA/WSV1ArFQens/s320/IMG_0350.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Standing in old "side yard" which is now back yard.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CPaBxk2W76A/UXyOZ34QujI/AAAAAAAADDM/SFWCQgGHqJg/s1600/IMG_0347.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CPaBxk2W76A/UXyOZ34QujI/AAAAAAAADDM/SFWCQgGHqJg/s320/IMG_0347.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
View from driveway looking toward side yard. The distance from the new fence and street is 22 feet, which is still plenty of room so the fence is not too obtrusive.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6cIoIZDqt28/UXyOaYnPWNI/AAAAAAAADDY/ycc3i37vCDE/s1600/IMG_0343.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6cIoIZDqt28/UXyOaYnPWNI/AAAAAAAADDY/ycc3i37vCDE/s320/IMG_0343.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I added some landscaping between the new fence and the driveway to dress up this area. More on that in another post.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FrxnKlh_j3Q/UXyObCXqBFI/AAAAAAAADDk/HWvr0AzXBUk/s1600/IMG_0342.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FrxnKlh_j3Q/UXyObCXqBFI/AAAAAAAADDk/HWvr0AzXBUk/s320/IMG_0342.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
View from driveway toward main gate.<br />

They have finished setting posts and are putting up most of the side rails.<br />
<br />
View from garden, I like the fact that they are using three side rails: top, bottom, and middle. I have seen fences where the installer only uses a top and bottom rail.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xXxLbAD1w7E/UXyHk4lfnoI/AAAAAAAAC6s/zRDWEFKcJlE/s1600/IMG_0334.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xXxLbAD1w7E/UXyHk4lfnoI/AAAAAAAAC6s/zRDWEFKcJlE/s320/IMG_0334.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
One section of the fence includes rails on both sides. I am installing the fence the "proper way" by putting the good side toward the street and my neighbors view. On the back section of the fence, the installer could not do the good side facing neighbor because they have a fence there already. So that section will have the good side towards me. I didn't want my neighbor to have the posts facing their view, so I did what was right and paid extra to have rails and boards installed on both sides of the posts. It cost me an extra 300 dollars to do that, but I think it is worth it to do it right.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x44qOZA0GnE/UXyHlyi70mI/AAAAAAAAC7E/UshVare55L8/s1600/IMG_0321.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x44qOZA0GnE/UXyHlyi70mI/AAAAAAAAC7E/UshVare55L8/s320/IMG_0321.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
You can see the neighbor's fence in the background and how my fence extends past that. It is that extension that is double sided.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7_tiOqSkJa8/UXyHnEh8agI/AAAAAAAAC7o/Bi4rPpo4gsg/s1600/IMG_0312.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7_tiOqSkJa8/UXyHnEh8agI/AAAAAAAAC7o/Bi4rPpo4gsg/s320/IMG_0312.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Another view.<br />

<br />
View from my driveway, they should start putting the pickets up tomorrow.<br />

So far I am really pleased with the quality of work being done by this company. I have been taking a lot of pictures and here are the highlights from day one.<br />
<br />
The first step was they measured off approximately where each post would go based on the string line I had set for them. They dropped a post and a bag of concrete at each mark.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mb3S7fAPOV4/UXieHanv-KI/AAAAAAAAC6M/V7HfWhwCp5w/s1600/IMG_0276.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mb3S7fAPOV4/UXieHanv-KI/AAAAAAAAC6M/V7HfWhwCp5w/s320/IMG_0276.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Another view from the driveway, gorgeous Spring day.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CeL847n-r-4/UXieG7Li-hI/AAAAAAAAC6A/9yT_m68PTd8/s1600/IMG_0277.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CeL847n-r-4/UXieG7Li-hI/AAAAAAAAC6A/9yT_m68PTd8/s320/IMG_0277.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Now the fun part, they started digging each hole by hand.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZwWmdBKFpFI/UXieGY6bo8I/AAAAAAAAC50/3N0yKtbB26I/s1600/IMG_0278.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZwWmdBKFpFI/UXieGY6bo8I/AAAAAAAAC50/3N0yKtbB26I/s320/IMG_0278.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Each hole was approximately 2 feet deep.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8J-ZZy9viWk/UXieGIJ7guI/AAAAAAAAC5o/Q8yn8E0F7-4/s1600/IMG_0279.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8J-ZZy9viWk/UXieGIJ7guI/AAAAAAAAC5o/Q8yn8E0F7-4/s320/IMG_0279.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
After they had an entire set of holes dug, they dropped in the posts.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZPfSlsDIzYM/UXieFMW_6dI/AAAAAAAAC5Q/YoTCiq8Uo-M/s1600/IMG_0281.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZPfSlsDIzYM/UXieFMW_6dI/AAAAAAAAC5Q/YoTCiq8Uo-M/s320/IMG_0281.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MQT6iOZekQc/UXieBQM9GJI/AAAAAAAAC3w/fGgAFCZ2V0M/s1600/IMG_0289.jpg"><br /></a>
They started by plumbing each corner post first, and then tied a string to each corner post. This string line was used to plumb the additional line posts in a perfect line.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qMDW7vR8Zmw/UXieDOuc7vI/AAAAAAAAC4g/e2Kvb0WsRHw/s1600/IMG_0285.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qMDW7vR8Zmw/UXieDOuc7vI/AAAAAAAAC4g/e2Kvb0WsRHw/s320/IMG_0285.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
How do I know it is a perfect line? Because it looks like one post from this angle straight on.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SUZW-68NOeI/UXieCc8RchI/AAAAAAAAC4I/Kmo1VAMDgUY/s1600/IMG_0287.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SUZW-68NOeI/UXieCc8RchI/AAAAAAAAC4I/Kmo1VAMDgUY/s320/IMG_0287.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
I stepped to the side and snapped a picture and you could see all the posts on this side have been set. <br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XNVzJz1ueoM/UXieB5lTREI/AAAAAAAAC38/Oc84NFRTdyo/s1600/IMG_0288.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XNVzJz1ueoM/UXieB5lTREI/AAAAAAAAC38/Oc84NFRTdyo/s320/IMG_0288.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />

<br />

The new house is on a nice sized corner lot and the backyard was fenced in. As soon as I looked at our house I had this vision of expanding the fence out into my side yard to capture more space in my backyard.<br />
<br />
There were a few issues with the existing fence, it was crooked as can be, it was leaning all over, and had a wobbly feeling to it. Yes, those are all technical fence terms. Not to mention the off white vinyl just stood out too much next to our house.<br />
<br />
So I started last fall getting fence quotes from all the "name brand" local fence companies in my town. I don't mean any disrespect, but most of them sounded like used cars salesmen. I found that it was going to cost more money to add an extension to the existing fence and have them correct the issue, than to just replace the whole thing and start over.<br />
<br />
So fast forward to this Spring, and I got a flyer in the mail from a local handyman business. They specialized in fences, concrete, and decks. I normally throw these things right in the trash, but this one looked nice. They had a website and the guy was really friendly when I called them. After many back and forth communications and questions I decided to give this guy a shot.<br />
<br />
Before he could get started, I had to take the existing fence down and figure out what to do with it. I decided to post it on Craigslist and believe it or not I had someone buy it. Taking the 250 feet of vinyl fence down took about four nights of solid work after getting home from my job. Luckily not one of the posts were set in concrete so pulling it down was pretty easy. Gee, now I know why it was crooked and wobbly.<br />
<br />
So, with all that, the fence contractor is here today and I decided it was time to blog about it. <br />
<br />
Here is a shot of the existing fence from Google Maps<br />
Looks pretty good from space, it was junk.<br />

<br />
We have sold the house, it's official! I can hardly believe it, but Georgia Home Garden 1.0 is no longer ours. Twelve years, one marriage, two kids and more DIY projects then I can count, I have so many memories of that house.<br />
<br />
I can't wait to start back blogging regularly about the new garden and all that I have been working on. Since I am a Seinfeld fanatic, George Costanza said it best: I'M BACK BABY, I'M BACK!Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18421605987086278458noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2913864041606190081.post-91051238613459640422013-03-14T11:29:00.000-04:002013-03-14T11:32:39.902-04:00Our Drought Finally Broken!!!The Georgia drought has finally been broken according to the United States drought monitor and my personal observations. I know I have mentioned the drought ever since I have had this blog. February finally brought some much needed rain to our area, but the problem was it came all at once. Some areas in Georgia saw 15-20 inches in one month!!! We didn't get that much in my county, but I think we totaled somewhere around 12 inches for the month.<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2913864041606190081" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><br />
The bad news is that much rain has made the ground too saturated to do any planting at this time. The good news is that all the <a href="http://georgiahomegarden.blogspot.com/2013/01/moving-georgia-home-garden-part-1.html" target="_blank">hard work I put in December</a> to fix some drainage issues appears to have worked. The ground is moist in my new garden area, but there are no issues with standing water. I think that if it can handle that much rain during the Winter, I should be in the clear.<br />
<br />
Back to the drought situation, I did some research on the <a href="http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/monitor.html" target="_blank">United States Drought Monitor</a> when we started getting all this rain and it shocked me how bad our drought really was. I looked at the historical data and I had to go back to mid 2010 to the last time my area of Georgia was as wet as it is now. I didn't even start vegetable gardening until 2010, so all my garden experience has been under severe drought conditions. I decided to post some historical images of our drought from the drought monitor, they have data going back to 2000 on their site. I highly recommend using this drought monitor tool, it is really awesome.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;"><b>Here is our current monitor, I am in mid east portion of the state right where that yellow area is. Yellow means no drought, just "abnormally dry" which is funny given how wet things are right now.</b></span><br />
<span style="color: red;"><b><img alt="http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/archive/20130305/pics/GA_dm_130305.png" class="decoded" height="237" src="http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/archive/20130305/pics/GA_dm_130305.png" width="320" /> </b></span><br />
<b><b></b> </b><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;"><b>Now look at this, only one month ago, my area was in the next to highest rating. It has been in severe to extreme drought for over two years. </b></span><br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2913864041606190081" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><img alt="http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/archive/20130205/pics/GA_dm_130205.png" class="decoded" height="237" src="http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/archive/20130205/pics/GA_dm_130205.png" width="320" /> <br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;"><b>You have to go back to July of 2010 to the last time my area was not in drought.</b></span><br />

I can't believe how fast the time is flying by. I am definitely going to have a garden at the new house and I have been busy even though I haven't blogged about it.<br />
<br />
I am happy to report that we have got a contract on our old Georgia Home Garden house and we are supposed to close first week in April! I am praying that this will be the one, and it will be just in time for Spring garden season. I hope I don't "jinx" it by blogging about it. <br />
<br />
I can't wait to get back to our "normal" family routine. I feel like my life has been completely put on hold dealing with the sell of this house. As much as I tried to appreciate the baby, she will be 1 on April 2nd, and I kind of regret doing all this while she was little. I know I didn't fully spend as much time with her as I did with my first daughter and that weighs on my mind. <br />

In this post I detail the finished project. Garden fever is starting to kick in.<br />
<br />
Here is a pic of the old garden at Georgia Home Garden 1.0, I always get nostalgic whenever I visit the old homestead and this was no exception. The garden looked pretty rough. The plan was to pry up the frames on each of the beds and haul them to the new house.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7NVm9moaQCM/UPYNE1saz-I/AAAAAAAACx0/7oVXl-nYnVs/s1600/DSCN8732.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7NVm9moaQCM/UPYNE1saz-I/AAAAAAAACx0/7oVXl-nYnVs/s320/DSCN8732.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Here is a close up after removing one frame, it only took five minutes to pry them up.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lygLzyXsYEg/UPYNGN8EnBI/AAAAAAAACyA/l4ysaguYFOs/s1600/DSCN8738.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lygLzyXsYEg/UPYNGN8EnBI/AAAAAAAACyA/l4ysaguYFOs/s320/DSCN8738.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
After I removed the frames, I decided to rake the soil to loosen the straight edges. This area can still be used to garden and I am leaving the soil. I considered hauling the soil to my new house since it is so rich, but I decided that is too much work. I will start fresh at the new house.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DdbOWh1Kinc/UPYNG57pg1I/AAAAAAAACyM/z79tG7g2MAc/s1600/DSCN8740.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DdbOWh1Kinc/UPYNG57pg1I/AAAAAAAACyM/z79tG7g2MAc/s320/DSCN8740.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Yes I am from Georgia, and yes I have some red neck in me. I didn't have anything to tie down the bed frames so I just piled all six in my truck and drove really really slow. I took back roads and nothing fell out. <br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C0sKXHR0WE8/UPYNH_ETO2I/AAAAAAAACyY/5WP9WB_aH-A/s1600/DSCN8742.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C0sKXHR0WE8/UPYNH_ETO2I/AAAAAAAACyY/5WP9WB_aH-A/s320/DSCN8742.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Here is the new spot for the three 4x8 beds. The plan is to put them right outside the shaded area.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Aqh2rgRkoBo/UPYNIfMZLfI/AAAAAAAACyk/nF2OhIyFwQQ/s1600/DSCN8743.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Aqh2rgRkoBo/UPYNIfMZLfI/AAAAAAAACyk/nF2OhIyFwQQ/s320/DSCN8743.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Here they are, all done and ready for some fresh dirt. There was an unbelievable amount of work in prepping this area to get to this point, but I am looking forward to spending many hours here.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gzDBWisCubc/UPYNJF2PHeI/AAAAAAAACyw/M0PSQQfcMCs/s1600/DSCN8745.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gzDBWisCubc/UPYNJF2PHeI/AAAAAAAACyw/M0PSQQfcMCs/s320/DSCN8745.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Another angle, they are placed right below the slope where the ground is a little more level.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1Pa6gQNfD2s/UPYNKL5Ua5I/AAAAAAAACy8/ta6vFSukfOs/s1600/DSCN8746.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1Pa6gQNfD2s/UPYNKL5Ua5I/AAAAAAAACy8/ta6vFSukfOs/s320/DSCN8746.JPG" /></a><br />

The old house hasn't sold and I was going to leave the beds there, but those jokers are coming with me now that the house hasn't sold. I am working on the first garden area at the new house, a North Facing side yard. This side yard is dead space and had drainage issues when we bought the house, but I think I can get some use out of it. <br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YqqNWnNJtWg/UPG9E58zNlI/AAAAAAAACuw/l3dYqfJ8PYE/s1600/DSCN8061.JPG"><br /></a>
So here it is before I started and a complete mess, full of weeds and mushy ground.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YqqNWnNJtWg/UPG9E58zNlI/AAAAAAAACuw/l3dYqfJ8PYE/s1600/DSCN8061.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YqqNWnNJtWg/UPG9E58zNlI/AAAAAAAACuw/l3dYqfJ8PYE/s320/DSCN8061.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
You can see the stains on the bottom of the brick, there were no gutters on this side of the house. I had them installed shortly after we moved in.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vQgOT1q8lB0/UPG9GCanoII/AAAAAAAACu4/LrOijMefAEY/s1600/DSCN8062.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vQgOT1q8lB0/UPG9GCanoII/AAAAAAAACu4/LrOijMefAEY/s320/DSCN8062.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Part of the problem with the drainage was the ground was sloped toward the house and was full of pits and high spots.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rNjomfNHuLM/UPG9GhM9LAI/AAAAAAAACvE/siLtNmZIK0g/s1600/DSCN8063.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rNjomfNHuLM/UPG9GhM9LAI/AAAAAAAACvE/siLtNmZIK0g/s320/DSCN8063.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Here is the view from my neighbors yard looking down at my house, you can see how the ground slopes.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FS7TYjEofgY/UPG9HjOZKoI/AAAAAAAACvQ/vV_odko_5Fc/s1600/DSCN8064.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FS7TYjEofgY/UPG9HjOZKoI/AAAAAAAACvQ/vV_odko_5Fc/s320/DSCN8064.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
I pulled the weeds, brought in 5 yards of fill dirt that was shoveled by hand and wheel barrow. (I am getting a real strong upper back, this brings my tally to 11 yards of material hand shoveled so far.)<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gujf1Auc6OI/UPG9IOrQFPI/AAAAAAAACvc/VhWpL-JPfD0/s1600/DSCN8536.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gujf1Auc6OI/UPG9IOrQFPI/AAAAAAAACvc/VhWpL-JPfD0/s320/DSCN8536.JPG" /></a> <br />
<br />
View from neighbors house<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RYD0uqODS84/UPG9Io9pWmI/AAAAAAAACvo/pjFMAMnYEDE/s1600/DSCN8538.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RYD0uqODS84/UPG9Io9pWmI/AAAAAAAACvo/pjFMAMnYEDE/s320/DSCN8538.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
I started on the house side and graded it away from the house to a low spot. I then went from the hill side and kept the natural slope but just filled it in to make a nice smooth surface.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BBPTIQlP4kw/UPG9JWD7qpI/AAAAAAAACv0/hwBWS6Ee5zw/s1600/DSCN8540.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BBPTIQlP4kw/UPG9JWD7qpI/AAAAAAAACv0/hwBWS6Ee5zw/s320/DSCN8540.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
I set a string line that was an equal distance from the house and made everything grade toward the string line and then toward my front yard. The goal was to create a slight gulley for the water to naturally flow toward. We got a few good rains after this pic was taken and it worked well. The ground is pretty mushy now, but that is only because the dirt is fresh and needs to settle.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FJad9L7P_H0/UPG9JlG1UUI/AAAAAAAACwA/B6CAgchS5zs/s1600/DSCN8541.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FJad9L7P_H0/UPG9JlG1UUI/AAAAAAAACwA/B6CAgchS5zs/s320/DSCN8541.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
I laid pine straw to keep the weeds at bay and left an area open to place the raised beds.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F_fyRIIqm6M/UPG9KaIBL0I/AAAAAAAACwM/Czj--sD7aFw/s1600/DSCN8587.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F_fyRIIqm6M/UPG9KaIBL0I/AAAAAAAACwM/Czj--sD7aFw/s320/DSCN8587.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Another angle from neighbors (I get weird looks from them, wondering what I am up to haha.)<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ld3hxCaJHII/UPG9LBHXUxI/AAAAAAAACwY/i5XYby2rfQQ/s1600/DSCN8592.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ld3hxCaJHII/UPG9LBHXUxI/AAAAAAAACwY/i5XYby2rfQQ/s320/DSCN8592.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Ok, now the most important part. Placement of the beds was going to be crucial in this North facing garden. The house shades this area, but the amount of shade depends on the time of day and more importantly the time of year. I did a lot of reading on that and decided to take a picture of the area at noon on December 21st, which is the Winter solstice. That is the time of the year when the sun is the lowest in the sky and the shade would be the worst. If I placed my beds outside this shade range on that day, then they should receive plenty of sunlight because the shade would only get better after that date. That is it for part 1, everything is ready to go now.<br />

I think it is perfectly natural to have a little buyer's remorse right after you move away from your first home into your second home. I joked with my wife that your first house is like your first love in that you never forget it. (Not the best analogy on my part, needless to say I had to talk my way out of that one) The best cure I have found for home buyers remorse is to start right away at making your new house your own, and I have been doing just that. Ironically same thing in matters of the heart, the sooner you move on the quicker you get over it, but I digress. <br />
<br />
This project came about because we bought our house during the Summer and when Fall came around and all the leaves fell from the trees I quickly realized my neighbor's house behind me looked right into my backyard. Our house sits lower than the houses behind us and to the left of us and I didn't notice it in the Summer because my neighbor had a huge Silver Maple that screened the other house.<br />
<br />
My solution was to plant some sort of shrub that would keep its foliage all year and I needed something large since the neighbors sit on higher ground than me. I searched the Internet on Hollies, Leyland Cypress, Arborvitaes, etc. and all of them had something I didn't like about them. I thought on the issue for a few weeks and it finally occurred to me what the solution might be. Our new house has several Lorapetalum bushes all around it and I remember reading that they can get pretty large. After researching several varieties I settled on "<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=burgundy+loropetalum" target="_blank">Burgundy Lorapetalums</a>" because they get 8-12 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. They are also very drought tolerant and grow very fast.<br />
<br />
I stopped by the same nursery down the road where I bought my trees and it was fate, they had exactly five 3 gallon sized plants which is the exact same size and number that I wanted. After some negotiating with the owner I got them for 25% off and they only cost me $50 dollars total for all five. I planted two together to screen the neighbor to my left, two together to screen the neighbor in the back, and that last one in the corner of the fence behind the Nuttall Oak tree. I am happy with the results and I can't wait to see them grow.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got halfway through planting and realized I needed to take some pictures while planting. I start by digging my hole 1.5 to 2 times bigger than the plant root ball.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8GOLxQrKuxw/UO9jDgV5OvI/AAAAAAAACso/9soBym75tJk/s1600/DSCN8564.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8GOLxQrKuxw/UO9jDgV5OvI/AAAAAAAACso/9soBym75tJk/s320/DSCN8564.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I know they say don't amend in clay soil because the plant will treat it like a clay pot but I did it anyway. I poured some good soil on bottom and then planted and filled the remainder with mostly good soil.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x0E6XdfZaFI/UO9jEef0caI/AAAAAAAACs0/pPx61CMhPrw/s1600/DSCN8566.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x0E6XdfZaFI/UO9jEef0caI/AAAAAAAACs0/pPx61CMhPrw/s320/DSCN8566.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After planting I put the old soil on top. It is usually better to use the majority of your existing soil and mix in amendments which is what I did when I planted my trees, this time I just got lazy and filled the hole with the good dirt. Oh well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rbn5uybADk4/UO9jFoZ78fI/AAAAAAAACtA/BtiekxDjCq4/s1600/DSCN8569.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rbn5uybADk4/UO9jFoZ78fI/AAAAAAAACtA/BtiekxDjCq4/s320/DSCN8569.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since the plants are located on a slope, I built a moat around the lower end of the plant to create a mini dam. This allows water to build up and soak into the root ball rather than just flowing down the hill.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z0KzLfCIzvw/UO9jGQdbwmI/AAAAAAAACtM/hIzAjKrHhL8/s1600/DSCN8571.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z0KzLfCIzvw/UO9jGQdbwmI/AAAAAAAACtM/hIzAjKrHhL8/s320/DSCN8571.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the first two that should grow together and screen this neighbors windows.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kjI3P73ScQ/UO9jHigu1LI/AAAAAAAACtY/6Wz87iRlhWY/s1600/DSCN8572.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kjI3P73ScQ/UO9jHigu1LI/AAAAAAAACtY/6Wz87iRlhWY/s320/DSCN8572.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the remaining three that should screen the neighbor to the rear. The one in the corner is for their second story window. Traditionally you would not plant a shorter plant behind a taller tree, but since this is for screening only I made an exception and think it will provide interest behind the tree in the Winter.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

It was a huge b&b Nuttall Oak that was planted in the Northwest corner of my yard. In the picture below that tree is planted where the shed is. I also wanted a big tree because I wanted to provide screening from my neighbors behind me.<br />
<br />
I can't stop at planting one tree, what fun would that be? Lucky for me, within 10 minutes of my new house are two nurseries. I stopped by one of them and I scored two more Nuttall oaks. Better than that is I got them for a steal of a price. They were 50% off and only cost me $25 per tree.<br />
<br />
They aren't the prettiest trees, in fact they are pretty much broom sticks with little to no branching. However, I can see past that and I know with a little care they will make fine trees. One of the two was in serious decline and may not make it, but for the price it was worth a shot. <br />
<br />
I planted the trees in my South facing side yard and I hope in 5 to 10 years they will provide shade for my house in the afternoon sun during our hot Summers. In the picture below, the pin marks represent roughly where the trees were planted. They are pretty tall trees at about 12 feet, but since they were crooked broom sticks, I staked them down to help them grow straight and protect them from the wind. <br />
<br />
I look forward to posting about these trees in the years to come and to chart their growth. <br />
<br />
<div style="clear: both; text-align: NONE;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In my last blog post, I ended with a picture of the corner of my yard and a big red "X". Obviously from the subject of this post it is obvious that I planned to plant a tree there, and not just any tree it had to be the perfect tree. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><b>A little background on me and trees:</b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>I am a little bit of a tree snob, there are only certain varieties that I like. What I look for in a tree is that it has a strong central leader at least the first 6 to 10 ft up the tree. Then coming off that central leader, I like a nice even branching structure. I also prefer deciduous trees that have great fall color, mostly red. At my old house, I planted several red maple varieties because they fit all those characteristics. However, red maples grow a lot of surface roots and they make landscaping difficult around them. Because of this I knew I didn't want red maples at my new house. When we moved into the new house, I had been researching trees for weeks on the web and then it hit me.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>At our church there are some of the most beautiful trees that I have ever seen. They have a wonderful branching structure, strong central leader, beautiful pyramidal to oval shape, just great looking trees. I asked someone who worked at the church if they knew what kind of trees they were. After some research, they told me Nuttall Oaks. I was like, say that again, never heard of it.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>Within minutes I was on my phone googling them and within five minutes I knew this was the one. It has all the characteristics I want and even more. It turns out this is an under used tree, but has all the great characteristics of so many other oaks without any bad ones. It has well behaved roots and actually prefers wet sites which was good for me because the area is kind of a gulley. <a href="http://thedailysouth.southernliving.com/2011/11/13/shade-tree-of-the-week-nuttall-oak-whats-that/" target="_blank">Here is a nice article about the Nuttall Oak</a>.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ok, I know that was probably way too much background information for a blog post, but I get pretty passionate about my trees. I will stop there and suggest you look up the Nuttall Oak, now on to the pics.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here is the spot with the big red "X" marking it</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I purchased a 2.5 inch caliper tree from a local nursery.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted something big for this site because I want it to fill in fast. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ball and burlap trees of this size are too big for me to handle.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

I had every intention of paying someone to do it for me as I thought it would be too much for me to handle. In my typical fashion, I obsessed over the project researching the Internet on moving sheds. After a few weeks I finally decided to tackle this myself.<br />
<br />
The reason to move the shed was mainly because its location was on a slope and the corner of it was very high off the ground. You could tell the previous owner had jacked it up several times adding wood to level it out.<br />
<br />
The shed is a pretty decent wood built one that is 10x10 feet and I use it to store all my landscaping equipment. From everything I read on the Internet, the way to do it is you slide 4 inch PVC pipes under the shed and roll it to the location that you want it.<br />
<br />
So that was my plan, me and a friend to move it one afternoon. My goal was to move the shed 20 feet out of the corner of the yard and then turn it 90 degrees so the doors faced my house. It seemed like it would be easy, but I was wrong. The problem I had was that the skids on my shed were facing the wrong direction to roll the shed. I really needed to turn it the 90 degrees first to get the skids in the right direction and then roll it. The problem with that was since it was already on a slope when we started to push it to turn it, the whole thing seemed like it wanted to tip over on us, talk about scary.<br />
<br />
Finally we decided to just drag it across the pipes the 20 feet first, and then we would turn it the 90 degrees. We pushed, clawed, grunted, groaned, and strained our way but we finally got it all done. It would have been a whole lot easier with a few more people, but hey you work with what you have. All in all I am happy with the shed's new locale and now I can focus on the next project...more on that in my next post.<br />

So here is the shed's original location in the corner of my yard. Behind it is a house from the neighborhood behind us. The house is somewhat screened from the pine trees and that silver maple. The crap in the yard is the stuff I had stored in it.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yQdftWDKtb8/UMVJTVMSIXI/AAAAAAAACmI/EF1TOL_cfZw/s1600/DSCN8317.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yQdftWDKtb8/UMVJTVMSIXI/AAAAAAAACmI/EF1TOL_cfZw/s320/DSCN8317.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Closer view you can see that one corner in a big time gully.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XqX9v4Xoeqg/UMVJUqp17iI/AAAAAAAACmU/ENxE720hqPk/s1600/DSCN8319.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XqX9v4Xoeqg/UMVJUqp17iI/AAAAAAAACmU/ENxE720hqPk/s320/DSCN8319.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
You can see where the previous owner just kept adding wood to level it out.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3rc1iMK0keM/UMVJVE-vBWI/AAAAAAAACmg/-_uabCkVttM/s1600/DSCN8320.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3rc1iMK0keM/UMVJVE-vBWI/AAAAAAAACmg/-_uabCkVttM/s320/DSCN8320.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
This was my tool, 4 inch PVC pipe. I had 3 pipes that were 10 feet long.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SUJ06eKq2A4/UMVJVn3RCeI/AAAAAAAACms/vvtw5M8LppI/s1600/DSCN8324.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SUJ06eKq2A4/UMVJVn3RCeI/AAAAAAAACms/vvtw5M8LppI/s320/DSCN8324.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
Here is the shed after I moved it and got it situated, it doesn't like much but it was a ton of manpower getting it moved and turned.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oHIj5l7ubMY/UMVJXZFOb3I/AAAAAAAACnE/YozoUD77c1s/s1600/DSCN8358.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oHIj5l7ubMY/UMVJXZFOb3I/AAAAAAAACnE/YozoUD77c1s/s320/DSCN8358.JPG" /></a><br />

When I reset the concrete blocks on each corner, I poured a bag of gravel in a small hole to help with drainage and settling in the future. I also used construction adhesive to glue each concrete block together. My logic here was that it would prevent the blocks from sliding. I also included a few more blocks in the middle just to give it extra support. It is also much closer to the ground and since I turned it 90 degrees the high side will be covered by the ramp.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T7iVxkztfKQ/UMVJWtOj-TI/AAAAAAAACm4/TA2pR5eiuV8/s1600/DSCN8357.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T7iVxkztfKQ/UMVJWtOj-TI/AAAAAAAACm4/TA2pR5eiuV8/s320/DSCN8357.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
And speaking of the ramp, when I removed it to move the shed I found some bones. Kind of creepy, I thought it was from a cat, but the eye sockets looked too large to me. Anyone archaeologists out there that can tell what this was?<br />

After I moved the shed, I cleaned up the gulley and filled it in with 2 cubic yards of fill dirt. I had to do this with shovel and wheelbarrow. "X" marks the spot, but what for....more on that in my next post.</div>

My favorite Christmas movie of all time is "A Christmas Story." I have seen it every year since it came out in 1983. I can quote every line and if you have seen the movie you know one of the best scenes is where Ralphie is forced to put on a bunny suit that his aunt sent as a gift. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I found a picture of the baby from Halloween and she looks about as happy as he did being dressed like a pink bunny. I thought it was cute and had to share, but it made me realize just how fast time has went in 2012. She is already eight months old.</div>

Really?! A pink bunny dad?</div>
