This was a pretty good week in the garden for harvests. I harvested the last of the corn from my second planting of Peaches and Cream. The second planting of purple hulls produced like crazy this week. I also got a good batch of jalapenos. A great week from the garden, I am blessed.
The final count was 50 ears of corn out of a 4x8 bed planted with 72 plants. These where the runts of the group, but were still pretty good looking. I am happy with 50 ears out of 32 square feet. I was hoping for 72, but that may have been too much to ask.
I am now an expert pea sheller by hand. Every night this week I would pick a big batch of purple hulls and I would have about 30 minutes of shelling to do. This picture was the nicest from the week. That is a pretty huge mixing bowl full of pods.
Here is my first good harvest of jalapeno peppers. The top row is a no heat variety and the bottom row is regular jalapenos. I could definately tell a difference between the two. The no heat variety should be called low heat because they still had a little bite to them.

What is the variety of those purple hulled peas? I did an on-line search and found several varieties.
Thanks Ed, these are called pink eye purple hull peas. I am happy with them so far, my third planting is just producing pods now. The only complaint I have, and this may be specific to my garden, is that the cow pea aphids and ants are all over them. Doesn't seem to hurt production too much, but every time I pick pods I get black ants running all over my hands. It is quite annoying.
Those peas are quite beautiful. I have never heard of those before. How do you like the flavor?

Those peas are gorgeous. I can't wait for my jalapenos to kick in. After your post about poppers the other night I finally broke down and bought some to make bacon wrapped poppers but now I'm craving more! Your corn looks great too. I think I'm only going to wind up with 10-12 ears from 15 stalks but considering I grew them in a rubbermaid tub, I'm not complaining!
Robin - The flavor is pretty good, as long as you cook them long enough. They are quite similar to black eye peas to me. White acre peas are my favorite and have a better taste and texture than purple hulls. I really only grew these because they were the only seeds I could get.
Barbara - If you got that many ears of corn from one rubbermaid container than that is really good. You are really only supposed to get 1 ear per square foot of planting space. Anything more than that is good.

We picked 5 ears of corn today. Apparently I didn't do as well pollinating as I thought because these had some gaps but they were still delicious. My 5-year-old was playing and didn't really care but my 7-year-old thought he was king of the world shucking HIS corn. He told his brother it's easy...it's just like unwrapping a present...a really yummy present! I think there are 5 more ears out there which will give me a total of 11 from 15 stalks. Not quite what I'd hoped for but not a bad experiment overall. My fall peppers are starting to set fruit so I'm really excited about that. I'll be happy to take some of those extra jalapenos off your hands!
That is great to get your kids involved. I started my garden last year so me and my daughter would have something to share. She quickly lost interest and now I am hooked. Oh well, maybe she will help a little more when she is older.
