Mailbox Flowers Update - Zinnias and Our First Sunflower

This year we planted white zinnias and sunflowers around our mail box.  An odd combination for sure, but I promised my daughter the biggest and tallest flowers and giant sunflowers fit the bill.

Well this week we got our first sunflower, it is over 8 feet tall with a bloom a foot wide.  It is a show piece, and I do get a lot of comments from people when they walk through the neighborhood.  They ask why did you plant those around your mailbox when they grow so big, and I say why not?

The poor zinnias really don't have a chance 

competing with these huge sunflowers.

 

There are still some beautiful zinnias though.
This is the best so far, nice and puffy.

Mailbox Sunflowers and Zinnias

I planted red and white zinnias around my mailbox last year and they turned out great.  This year I decided to only plant white ones because they had bigger blooms and looked better.  They have finally started to open up and slowly bloom and I can't wait to see how they look this year.

On another note, my Lorax seed experiment with my daughter failed and the Lorax tree did not make it.  I felt bad for her so I told her that I would buy her the tallest, largest, and most beautiful sunflower seeds I could find and that we could plant them around the mailbox.  She was excited of course, but I knew at the time the sunflowers were going to be huge next to the zinnias.

My wife thought I was crazy planting something that will grow 7 to 10 feet around our mailbox, but I told her what my baby girl wants my baby girl gets. LOL  I tried to plant the sunflowers around the perimeter of the zinnias.  They are about three feet tall and dwarf the zinnias already.  Here are a few pics.
