Garden Update - May 16, 2012

Please visit and like my new facebook page Georgia Home Garden.

Few words, just lots of pictures this week.

Overhead picture of garden,
standing on my picnic table.

Side shot, grass is getting green.

Front shot of garden.
I put down a fresh layer of pine straw this week.

Corn plot, batches planted about a month apart.

Silks are forming...

And tassels are getting ready to pollinate.

My mini tomato alley, cages are tied to fence post.

Lettuce and spinach bed
I just harvested lettuce when this pic was taken.

Squash bed

Four more tomatoes

Another yellow squash bed.

Eggplants on the left, bell peppers on the right.

Last but not least, I planted my butter beans.

Wow! Everything is looking great. I like the line straw in the paths, it seemd to pull everything together.

I love your set up, with the raised beds. I wish I had enough room to do something like that. If I were to expand the garden, I would have to put the rest of it on the other side of the house.

It looks so neat and...mature! I'd say you're about a month ahead of me. I love the pine straw on the paths, too. That's something that isn't available here. LOL, maybe next year you'll have a big Tomato Alley!

WOW!! I am amazed at your beautiful garden!! This definitely inspires me for my next go 'round. All your hard work certainly has paid off. Everything looks so neat, clean and manageable. Thanks for sharing. By the way, I've already harvested four gallon size bags of lettuce that I grew from seed. I am looking forward to having squash very soon. Thanks for this post.

Ed - Thanks, yeah it is amazing what a fresh layer of pine straw will do to freshen everything up.

Lisa - Thank you...I can't wait to harvest the corn too. I just used my last bag from last year's stockpiles so I am going to be without fresh garden corn for another month. That is unacceptable. :)

Cristy - My raised bed area is 21 x 21 feet. It looks bigger in pictures than it really is. I have been happy with it. I am considering raking all the straw up in the winter and putting down heavy duty weed fabric and then replacing the straw. The straw has to be applied thick about twice a year to keep the weeds from popping up. They mainly pop up around the edges the beds.

Granny - You saying that my garden looks neat is an amazing compliment. You are the queen of having a neat garden. If there is one thing we have in Georgia it is plenty of Pine trees and straw. I have found a pretty good person that will deliver it for only $3 a bail. The big box stores typically charge $3.75 a bail and that requires me to pick it up. I like it as opposed to other mulch because it is very soft and easy on the knees when working the garden. We will see on that tomato alley...I am reaching the limits of space of what I can maintain with the demands of work, family, etc.

Bernadine - Thank you and I am flattered that my garden inspires you. Your garden looks neat and manageable too. Congrats on the lettuce harvest, I actually had a huge salad tonight for dinner. I can't wait to see your squash.

Thanks Holly, if mother nature is kind to me I should have a decent year. I never count my harvests until they are in my basket. :)
